Exterior Doors
- Should always be locked at night and every time you leave your home.
- Should be solid hardwood or metal-clad.
- Should contain wide-angle peepholes.
- Any glass should be reinforced and shatterproof.
- All entryways should have a working keyed entry lock and sturdy deadbolt lock installed into the frame.
- Spare keys should be kept with a trusted neighbor and not hidden on the property.
Garage and Sliding Doors
- The door leading from the attached garage into the home should be solid wood or metal-clad and equipped with a quality keyed door lock and deadbolt. The overhead garage door should be equipped with a lock so as not to depend solely on the automatic garage door opener.
- Garage doors should always be locked when leaving the home.
- Sliding glass doors should be equipped with a sturdy working key lock device.
- Sliding glass doors should not be equipped with a dowel or pin, but a lock that will prevent the door from being shoved aside or lifted off the track.
- Sliding glass doors should always be locked at night and every time you leave your home.
Windows
- Every window should have a working key or be securely pinned.
- Windows should always be locked even when open only a few inches for ventilation.
Outdoors
- Shrubs and bushes should be adequately trimmed to prevent areas in which to hide.
- Dark areas around the home should be illuminated.
- Every outside door should have a bright working light to illuminate visitors.
- Outdoor lights should be illuminated every evening whether or not the home is occupied or a motion-control illumination device should be installed.
- The house number should be clearly displayed so that emergency responders can find the home.
When the Home is Unoccupied for Extended Periods
- At least two interior lights should be on timers and programmed in a logical sequence to turn on and off.
- Security system should be engaged.
- Mail and newspaper delivery should be temporarily suspended or arrangements for a neighbor to collect them daily should be made.
- Arrangements with a neighbor to keep an eye on the home should be made.
- Arrangements with a neighbor or maintenance person should be made to maintain the yard.
Outdoor Property and Valuables
- Latches on gates and shed doors should be equipped with high-security laminated padlocks and locked after every use.
- Grills, lawn mowers, tools, bicycles and the like should be locked in a shed or garage after every use or stored out of plain site and locked to a stationary object.
- Firearms should be unloaded, safety on, secured with a trigger lock and stored in a lock box or gun safe.
- Televisions, high-fi equipment, computers and the like should all be inscribed for easy identification in the event of recovery after a burglary.
- A complete home inventory with photographs should be kept current, a copy of which should be located off the property with a trusted neighbor or in a safety deposit box, etc.
